Season 4, Episode 4: What’s Sex Got to Do with It?

Ugh. One of my least favorite episodes. It is mostly unforgettable and involves longer story arcs for everyone so we have fewer opportunities to trash Carrie, but don’t worry! There are still a few reasons!

Carrie is at Ray King’s apartment in Queens listening to jazz while he chops vegetables like a maniac. He is rocking out and really excited about the bass going on when Carrie decides to tell him she doesn’t like jazz – rude but I agree with her. Not a jazz fan at ALL. Ray, however, convinces her that jazz is the gateway to orgasms while he feels her up. Of course, there are still reasons why Carrie Bradshaw is the worst, so let’s focus on those.

#1 – The next night out with the girls, Carrie announces the following about Ray’s non-musical talents:

Carrie also says she usually needs to be in love to have that kind of orgasm. Crazy how many previous orgasms she had with people she didn’t love but still rocked her world. As the ladies continue gossiping, Samantha announces that she is in a relationship with Maria. The girls are more shocked that she used the word relationship rather than her being a lesbian.

#2 – When the night is over and Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are walking and talking shit about Samantha dating a woman when Carrie says something ELSE to solidify that she is the WORST.

Carrie: You know, the truly amazing thing is, I had the news tonight! I had THE MOST intense ….

Miranda: Mind-blowing I believe is the word

Carrie: …orgasm of my life, and Samantha still managed to up-sex me.

I didn’t realize Carrie considered sex or sex experiences or sex stories a competition! It is a personal affront to Carrie that her orgasm lost out to Samantha’s news.

SIDEBAR: Charlotte and Trey are able to fuck each other while Miranda keeps ordering pastry/cake-type sweets to make up for the fact that she’s not having sex.

#3 – Ray shows up at Carrie’s apartment just as Samantha is calling her to talk about Maria. Ray announces he wants a Bourbon and to go down on Carrie, but not in that order, so she LETS HIM GO DOWN ON HER WHILE SHE IS STILL ON THE PHONE WITH SAMANTHA. This is especially egregious given how often Samantha listens to Carrie obsess about herself and her relationships. But seriously, who DOES THAT???

#4 – Carrie tries to talk to Ray about his past, upbringing, etc, and all he wants to do is have sex. In the voiceover, she says it was her best relationship ever. I have so many thoughts about this. I mean with Big, she wanted the world. She wanted to be THE ONE, and be besties with his Mom, and have a key to his apartment and and and you get the picture. Now she’s with an unemotional guy who is a good lay and she’s happy with that? It seems obvious that he will never hurt her because he has nothing of substance to offer her.

SIDEBAR SEXING IT UP: We see a montage of Charlotte and Trey, Carrie and Ray, Samantha and Maria, all having fun. And then there’s Miranda eating cake. No judgement!

Carrie realizes a couple things about her relationship with Ray (and Ray in general). First of all, their relationship is based only on sex because second of all he has ADHD and cannot have a conversation with her about the same thing for longer than ten seconds before moving on to something else. She gives up and just decides to have sex with him until she can’t deal with him anymore – which happens soon.

#5 – Then she does the walk of shame from Queens to Manhattan? I think not! But that is what the end of the episode implies.

  1. So, their dear friend Sam, who has always, ALWAYS been supportive to them, no matter what, announces that “she is seeing someone she actually likes very much“.

And, instead of being supportive they are making a mockery of her. Nice :eyes-rolling:

  2. Agreed that they were *all* such sucky friends to Samantha this episode, but Charlotte’s face when Sam told them: “get those looks off your faces” was high key terrifying 😂😂
